FERRARI 430 SCUDERIA
Lap time: 1min 19.7sec
The 510hp Scuderia has just 12hp more than the standard Ferrari F430, but it’s also around 100kg lighter. That means it can sprint to 62mph in 3.6sec and lap the Top Gear track in 28th place overall. Launched in 2007, the ‘Scud’ remains one of the finest Ferraris to drive.
NISSAN GT-R
There’s a reason car enthusiasts call the GT-R ‘Godzilla’. Despite wearing the same badge as a humble Micra, this V6-engined, four-wheel-drive coupe lapped the track quicker than supercars costing several times as much. The 2008 GT-R here had 492hp, but later versions were even quicker – as the Stig would eventually discover
MERCEDES-BENZ SLS AMG ROADSTER
Lap time: 1min 19.6sec
It might not have the SLS coupe’s signature gullwing doors, but the Roadster lacks nothing in terms of gut-wrenching performance. Under that long bonnet lurks a 571hp V8 that propels it to 62mph in 3.8sec and makes a noise like thunder. It probably even drowned out the Stig’s easy-listening tunes.
ARIEL ATOM 2 300
Lap time: 1min 19.5sec
As Jeremy pointed out, the Ariel Atom is probably the closest thing to a four-wheeled superbike. This version has a 300bhp supercharged Honda Civic Type-R engine. With a kerb weight of just 500kg, that gives it a Ferrari-bashing power-to-weight ratio of 600bhp per tonne. It’s enough to make your cheeks vibrate.
PORSCHE 911 GT2 (997)
Lap time: 1min 19.5sec
The ferocious GT2 is effectively a rear-wheel-drive version of the (4WD) 911 Turbo, with a bit of extra power for good measure. If you’re brave enough, its twin-turbocharged 530hp flat six will keep going all the way to 210mph. Porsche fan Richard Hammond got very excited about this one. The Stig didn’t, but then he doesn’t get excited about anything.
LAMBORGHINI GALLARDO LP560-4
Lap time: 1min 19.5sec
The Gallardo was first launched in 2003, but this upgraded LP560-4 version was tested by Top Gear in 2008. As its name suggests, the car’s 5.2-litre V10 kicks out 560hp and drives through all four wheels. Now replaced by the Huracan, the Gallardo is easily the bestselling car in Lamborghini’s history.
FERRARI 458 ITALIA
Lap time: 1min 19.1sec
Edging ahead of its rival Lamborghini, the Ferrari 458 Italia posted a 1min 19.1sec lap – making it the 22nd fastest car around the TG track. The 458 looks stunning, and its spine-tingling 570hp V8 revs all the way to 9,000rpm. No wonder James May parted with his own money to buy one.
FERRARI ENZO
Lap time: 1min 19.0sec
Ferrari’s flagship Enzo was named after its founder, who died in 1988. Launched in 2002, it borrowed technology from Ferrari’s Formula One team, including a lightweight carbon-fibre chassis and ‘flappy paddle’ gearbox. A mid-mounted 660hp V12 gives the Enzo a 0-62mph time of just 3.1 seconds. Luckily, it has advanced ceramic brake discs, too.
MERCEDES-BENZ SLS AMG BLACK SERIES
Lap time: 1min 19.0sec
The hardcore version of the SLS shaved 0.6sec off the lap time of the Roadster. It features engine and bodywork modifications from the SLS AMG GT3 race car, including new camshafts and carbon-fibre spoilers. Sticky (but fast-wearing) Michelin Pilot Sport Cup tyres provide limpet-like cornering grip.
LAMBORGHINI MURCIELAGO SV
Lap time: 1min 19.0sec
Road-legal cars don’t get much more extreme than this. The SV, or ‘SuperVeloce’ is the ultimate version of Lamborghini’s V12 supercar, with 670hp and a 0-62mph time of 2.9sec. Many would struggle to tame such a beast, but not the Stig – he coaxed the Murcielgo around the track in just 1min 19sec.
